And it is worth mentioning that the antidiabetic properties of lemon mainly come from two important ingredients – vitamin C and soluble fiber. So, if you want to cure diabetes, this is a good idea to add it into your diabetic diet to help you keep your blood sugar under control.

Vitamin C

This fruit is packed with lot of vitamin C and soluble fiber, which are good for people with diabetes. No wonder it has been listed as one of superfoods by The American Diabetes Association.

As mentioned above, it is rich in vitamin C. This is why the citrus fruit family is the preferred fruit for long sea voyages since lacking of vitamin C might lead to scurvy. As one of powerful antioxidants, vitamin C is able to eliminate free radicals in the body. As a result, it prevents the cells and membranes from damaging. Studies show that low levels of vitamin C are associated with diabetics. The good news is that vitamin C aids in collagen production, reduces fasting blood sugar, improves your level of insulin resistance, and so on. And all these functions are helpful to control the diabetic symptoms of type 2. However, you have to disagree that it is just a case of more is better here because too much of it could backfire.

Soluble fiber

When it comes to soluble fiber, you surely know that it is good for losing weight and, of course, lowering blood sugar levels. In addition to treating diabetes, it reduces the chances of developing heart disease, a new study suggests. This is because it has been found to lower cholesterol and reduce blood pressure.

On the one hand, consuming more soluble fiber is good for diabetes management because it helps balance blood sugar level that is too low or too high. As a result, the blood sugar stabilization is good for slowing glucose absorption. As you know, the carbohydrates from the foods in your diet will be broken down into glucose, which is the simplest form of carbohydrates to provide energy. However, the absorption of too much sugar too quickly would be harmful to your health.

On the other hand, consuming more soluble fiber is good for the prevention of cardiovascular disease. As you know, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is often referred to as bad cholesterol. In other words, you need to lower the LDL levels to reduce your risk of dying of a heart attack. At the same time, some studies have shown that people with diabetes have a higher risk of developing a stroke or heart attack. So keep in mind to take in more soluble to lower your LDL levels to a healthy range.

As you can see now, lemon can be helpful in diabetes treatment, mainly thanks to plenty of vitamin C and soluble fiber contained. However, you may find drinking lemon water alone can be a little monotonous. Instead, you can add some other fruits, such as orange or limes, since they are rich in soluble fiber while adding flavor. I should caution, however, that it is a good idea to use the fresh-squeezed juices right away to prevent glycemic index from rising after they have been cut. By the way, other similar diabetes-friendly foods, for example bran and beans, can do the job too. So, stick with them and over time they will help minimize and relieve symptoms of diabetes type 2.
