Is Jujube Good for Diabetics?

On the one hand, this is a nutrition-packed fruit that is good for a patient’s recovery. On the other hand, this is such a popular fruit that the patients actually get a chance to eat it. So the right answer means a lot to them as it may affect the recovery or, worse still, aggravate state of illness. Because that is one of the possibilities, we need to find out the link between eating red dates and diabetes.

As a life-long disease, diabetes can make a lot of trouble to the sufferers because so far there is no known cure and the medication for that. That’s to say, this is a life changing experience ever since because the patients have to always be looking for ways to manage their blood glucose levels. The methods include taking insulin or oral medicines, changes in diet, exercising on a regular basis, and so on. In this sense, it is not difficult to understand why diabetics make a fuss about the matter of eating such small red dates.

Jujube trees are a crop mainly grown in temperate parts of the world. They are so hardy that they can be found in desert areas. Its fruits have long been lauded as a tonic for blood in the east. There the most known health benefits are to produce blood and tranquilize the mind. As a result, they are often to be taken for the treatment of insomnia and blood deficiency. Now, modern pharmacology found that they contain protein, fat, sugars, organic acids, vitamin A, vitamin C, calcium, and so on. It is worth mentioning that it is especially rich in vitamins and minerals, which is why it is called the “living vitamin pill” sometimes.

Although jujube contains a variety of tonic ingredients that are good for the body’s metabolism and health, especially for the treatment for vascular diseases and some allergic diseases, it is not an ideal food for diabetes. The reason is simple – it is rich in sugar. So avoid eating too many red dates, especially the preserved ones. Or excessive consumption will cause spikes in blood sugar levels.

In short, it isn’t advisable for diabetics to consume high-sugar fruits, such as jujube fruits, hawthorn, bananas, and the like. However, this does not necessarily mean that all fruits should be banned here. If blood sugar levels have always been well controlled, the patients can consider eating a small amount of apple, pear, strawberry, peach, watermelon, and other fruits that are low in natural sugar content. By the way, they are the ideal one when they contain less than 10 percent of carbohydrates and 15 percent of the calories and sugar. In addition, eating them during the day and between meals is good for the health too since by doing so it can help reduce the impact on blood sugar. Last but not least, don’t eat lots of fatty nuts, such as peanuts, pumpkin seeds, and walnuts, so as not to aggravate the fat metabolic disorder and reduce the rate of receptor binding.
