Is Flaxseed Oil Good For Acne?

According to many natural health enthusiasts, fax oil can help acne and other skin problems. In theory, it may work for two reasons. On the one hand, it has anti-inflammatory properties. On the other hand, it can help health conditions linked to hormonal imbalance. However, it is important to note that this is not one of scientifically proven remedies and natural cures for acne. In fact, some users didn’t see improvement or even found that it made acne worse after they’ve tried this home remedy.

Omega-3 fatty acids

First of all, the acne-fighting properties of flaxseed oil are believed to contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are necessary for human health. It is worth mentioning that these essential fatty acids can’t be produced by the body. Research shows that dietary omega-3 (n-3) fatty acids have anti-inflammatory effect.

When it comes to acne lesions, there are noninflammatory and inflammatory types. The typical noninflammatory ones include open comedones (blackheads) and closed comedones (whiteheads). For that reason, it makes sense in the treatment of inflammatory lesions in acne, which include cysts, acne rosacea, nodules, pustules, and papules. This form of acne is reddened, swollen, hot and often painful.

Stress is an important factor in acne because it causes an increased release of a stress hormone called cortisol. In addition, stress has been shown to cause inflammation too. Since fax oil is a good source of ω-3 fatty acids, it may help decrease body’s adverse health effects from stress, reduce inflammation, and clear sebum from pores.

Lignans are a type of polyphenolic compound naturally found in the hulls of flaxseed. They are known for their estrogenic or anti-estrogenic activity. Acne can signal an underlying hormonal disorder sometimes. That’s to say, working to balance hormones should clearly be at the top of the priority list in this case. Since lignan precursors are most abundant in flaxseeds, a diet rich in flaxseeds is good for hormone-generated acne.

What’s more, lignans may reduce the inflammation that accompanies acne and some certain illnesses. Thanks to the anti-inflammatory benefits of lignans, increased dietary isoflavone and lignan intake can help acne-related inflammation.

Since two components in flaxseed (omega-3 fatty acids and lignans) can help lessen inflammation, it makes sense to use flaxseed oil in acne treatment. And currently it is often taken in the capsule form and usually a couple of capsules, equivalent to the amount of 29.57 milliliters, are highly recommended per day. And it may take more than half a month to see improvement. In general, the users should give it up if they observe worsening symptoms at the beginning or see no improvement after one month’s supplementation.

Last but not least, it is a good idea to consult a doctor before using flaxseed oil to get clear skin. There are two reasons to do so. On the one hand, it is all about safety although flaxseed is generally considered safe for all. On the other hands, the users can get more benefits on acne treatment from doctor’s advice.
