Health Benefits of Hard Water

These days, more and more people are becoming aware of the dangers of hard water. However, these disadvantages have been overstated, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Just like soft water, the hard one has its pros and cons. Unfortunately, the health benefits of hard water are often overlooked. So, it is worth taking some time to figure out if it helps or hurts people’s health.

Statistically, more than 85% of American homes have relatively hard water. In comparison, it affects water in more than 60% of homes in the UK. So, this is a very common problem. The reason why water is considered “hard” is not because it touches and feels hard but contains a high level of dissolved minerals, such as calcium or magnesium.

There are quite a few myths about hard water and many people consider it to be an issue in their health. However, there is a very weak inverse relationship between water hardness or softness and the risk of cardiovascular disease, according to some studies. That’s to say, this is not a health hazard. Instead, it may confer some benefits due to the high mineral content.

As mentioned above, both hard and soft water have advantages and disadvantages. When it comes to hard drinking water, it can be one of good food sources of a number of important minerals, thanks to the amount of dissolved calcium and magnesium in the water. As everyone knows, zinc, calcium, and magnesium are essential to a healthy diet. As parts of the dietary needs of humans, magnesium helps keep the heart rhythm steady, bones strong, and blood pressure normal while calcium helps reduce obesity, prevent colon cancer, and maintain healthy bones and dental care.

Some studies have found a correlation between hardness of water and lower mortality from heart disease. Cardiovascular disease involves the heart or blood vessels. It can be fatal, and the risk factors include age, ethnicity, race, and so on. The good news is that hard drinking water is good for heart health and reduces the risk for heart disease. However, further study is needed on link between them.

Although soft drinking water contains low concentrations of ions of calcium and magnesium, it has higher sodium content than hard water. In general, consuming too much of salt is bad for overall health since it increases the risk of developing hypertension and then stroke, kidney disease, and heart disease. So, those with a very high risk of the above mentioned diseases should limit their total daily consumption of sodium. Apparently, the water that has high mineral content can be of some help to them.

It is worth mentioned that water that contains a significant quantity of dissolved minerals can cause some problems although it is harmless for health. For example, it causes a film on bathroom surfaces and glass, makes hair sticky and dull, has devastating effects on household appliances, and so on.
