No, chow chows are not hypoallergenic since they shed twice a year and, worse still, will shed terribly in adulthood. This answer may break your heart if you, as one of allergy sufferers, want a chow chow so badly. However, the truth is that there is no such thing as 100 percent hypoallergenic dog breeds in the world. In other words, you may still have chance to own one because you never know what would happen before making a contact.
Traditionally, the short-haired canine breeds are less likely to cause allergic reactions, compared to those long-haired ones. The typical hypoallergenic dogs, or non-shedding dogs, are Argentine Pila Dog, Australian Silky Terrier, Chinese Crested, Shih Tzu, Standard Poodle, and so on. Since these dogs barely moult, they don’t produce allergen particles carried in the air. As you can see now, unfortunately chowdren isn’t one of them.
If you really adore a chow you should give it a try even though this is one of seasonal shedders. The reason for that is twofold: the breakout induced by pet hinges on the severity of your allergy, plus you may be immune to some breeds of dogs. Of course, the chance like that is slim, but not impossibly slim. Maybe you are just that lucky dog. But first of all you have to try. The feasible method is to cuddle chow puppies and see what happen next. But please note that sometimes the allergic reaction will occur only after you have exposed to dander, hair, and dust in the air for some time. So, never make rash decisions on this matter.
If it turns out that you are allergic to a chow, this is probably not a bad thing. At least it confirms that it is just not for you and from now on this idea won’t bother you anymore. However, by doing so it may bring harm to the psyche of both you and the pet. In other words, the last thing you want to see is to wind up with a departure because it may take a while to find your allergy symptoms. Since chowdren is one of very human animals, the departure will badly hurt it even though you just spend a brief period of time with it. So, think twice before you take home one of them.
